Sida (acrónimo de síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida) es la denominación de los estados avanzados de la infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). Clínicamente, el sida es declarado cuando un paciente seropositivo presenta un conteo de linfocitos T CD4 inferior a 200 células por mililitro cúbico de sangre. En esta condición, el sistema inmune se halla gravemente deteriorado, de modo que el paciente queda expuesto a diversos procesos patológicos generados por un conjunto de infecciones oportunistas. Cuando las condiciones de los servicios médicos no permiten la realización de pruebas de laboratorio, se declara que un paciente ha desarrollado sida cuando presenta enfermedades que se consideran definitorias del síndrome.
